Faculty / Staff Parking Permits
A valid parking permit is required at all times when parking on campus. Most faculty/staff parking permits are virtual, so upon successful vehicle registration within your account, your license plate will serve as your permit. Faculty and staff may purchase and manage their permits by logging into the myCommute portal with their UCInetID and password. If you are a new UCI employee and are unable to log into myCommute, you will need to come to the Transportation Office to purchase a faculty/staff permit.
If you have a hybrid work schedule and commute to the UCI Main Campus for three days or less per week, we recommend signing up for the Sustainable Transportation (ST) Membership program as a telecommuter. You may supplement your incentive permits with day-use permits.
All UCI affiliates are not eligible to receive parking permits that are charged to the University funds. By paying for an employee’s permit, the department would, in essence, be providing the individual with additional compensation. Receiving compensation without reporting to the Internal Revenue Service violates Federal and State tax laws.

Additional Information
Overnight Parking
For the safety of those on campus, overnight parking is not permitted. If you anticipate a need for overnight parking, you will need to submit an overnight vehicle request form.
A valid parking permit is still required for the duration of overnight vehicle requests. All overnight parking requests are subject to review, and you will be contacted if there are any perceived problems involving your request.
Emeritus / Retiree
For those faculty or staff who are retired and continuing services without compensation, Transportation and Distribution Services offers parking permits at half price. To purchase this permit, email permits@uci.edu. For questions related to obtaining an emeritus card, please contact the Center of Emeriti & Retirees.
Payroll Deduction
Biweekly and monthly payroll deductions are usually processed on the 10th of every month. For biweekly paid employees, the monthly parking fee is divided across both paychecks. All employee deductions occur in arrears. Therefore, each deduction pays for the previous month’s parking fees. Parking fees are deducted on a pre-tax basis only.
Qualifications
- You must be in the UCPath payroll system with an appointment of 50% or greater (no fellowships, grants, or without salary appointments).
- Your referenced appointment must be for a minimum of three months or longer as payroll deducted permits must be obtained for a minimum of three months.
- If your appointment is indefinite, your deductions will continue until you cancel your permit.
- Undergraduate student employees are not eligible for payroll deduction.
Cancellation
You are responsible for paying the monthly fee on your parking permit until you request a permit cancellation. To avoid continuing charges, cancel your permit through your myCommute account or email parking@uci.edu prior to the 10th of the month. Payroll-deducted permits canceled after the 10th will be charged the monthly parking rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
- I work 20 or more hours but my department didn’t/won’t enter me into the payroll system as 50% or more, can I still have my permit taken out on payroll deduction?
No. Even though that may be the case, the payroll deduction system cannot deduct employees who are below 50%. - I am on a post-doc or on a fellowship can I qualify for a payroll deduction?
No. Most post-doc and fellowships are paid through outside funding and not from university funds. We cannot payroll deduct outside funding sources. - I do not have my employee ID number yet can I still sign up for payroll deduction?
No. You will need to come into the Parking Office and purchase a monthly permit. Once your ID appears in the system you may sign up for payroll deduction. - I am an undergraduate student and I work on campus can I qualify for a payroll deduction?
No. If you are a student you will not qualify for payroll deduction, because undergraduate appointments are usually below 50%. - I am a graduate student and I work as a Teaching/ Research Assistant can I qualify for payroll deduction?
Yes. As long as you are in the payroll system as 50% or more and are not working without a salary or on a fellowship. - I am an emeriti professor can I still do payroll deduction?
No. If you are working without a salary we cannot payroll deduct you. - If I do a payroll deduction, do I pay for my parking in advance?
No. Payroll deduction is done in arrears which means on your paycheck you are paying for the month you previously parked. - What is the difference between having the monthly amount deducted on a pre-tax or post-tax basis?
The pre-tax option reduces your taxable income, which means your salary is taxed on a lower income on a monthly basis. The Post-tax option taxes your whole income. - How do I choose the pre-tax option?
Pre-tax is automatic unless you choose to opt out of it. - When do I need to cancel my permit so I am not charged for the following month?
The cut-off date for payroll is the 10th of each month. You will need to cancel your permit through your myCommute account or email parking@uci.edu prior to the 10th of the month to not be charged for parking that month. - I was on medical leave/sabbatical for the past few months and I didn’t know I had to cancel my permit; can I now get a refund?
If you leave the University for any reason it is your responsibility to cancel your permit. When a person has an active permit on payroll deduction and the amount is not applied to a paycheck, the amount accumulates in a suspended account until another paycheck is issued. The total outstanding amount will then be taken out of your next paycheck. - Is my permit automatically cancelled when I leave the university?
No. Your permit is not cancelled until you have requested cancellation through your myCommute account or email parking@uci.edu - I came in on the 12th of the month do I have to pay for the whole month?
Yes. Your permit is prorated on a daily, weekly, or monthly rate, whichever is more economical. If you purchase a permit in the middle of the month and there are two or more weeks left in the month the monthly rate will apply.
*Permit options and rates are subject to change at any time.
