Rapid Return

Rapid Return utilizes Document Management’s high-speed imaging technology to convert graded paper exams into individual digital files, labeled by student ID. Files are delivered to instructors in a downloadable zip format allowing for easy upload into Gradescope, an AI-assisted grading tool integrated with Canvas. Developed in partnership with the Office of Information Technology, Rapid Return enhances grading consistency and fairness across instructional teams. It also simplifies the process of returning hundreds of graded written exams directly to students through Canvas in just a few simple steps.

Using Rapid Return

 

Step 1: Prepare Exam Materials

Rapid Return services must be requested before exams are administered to students.

  1. Prior to making exam copies, initiate your Rapid Return request via ServiceNow.
  2. Create a cover sheet by inputting your course, exam, and KFS information.
  3. Print and attach the cover sheet to the top of your exam document. Do not alter the cover sheet. Coversheet alterations will result in a substantial delay and additional fees.
  4. Make any necessary copies of the exam with the original cover sheet. Use only one (1) staple per exam. Additional staples will result in extra preparation charges.
  5. At the time of the exam, instruct your students to fill in the cover sheet with their name, student ID number, UCI email address, and the date.
  6. Collect and grade the exams.
  7. Grading may be completed either by instruction staff or using Gradescope.

Step 2: Digital Imaging

  1. Schedule a pick-up time or drop off exams between Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at:

  2. You will be notified via email once all exams have been processed. Please allow three business days for imaging and processing. Additional time may be required during high-impact times (such as midterms and finals).

Step 3: Setting Up Exams in Gradescope

  1. Create a Gradescope “Assignment” in Canvas.
  2. Link to your Canvas course.
  3. Choose a scoring method.
  4. Sync your roster.
  5. Create the exam in Gradescope.
  6. Create an “outline” to identify students on the coversheet.

Step 4: Distributing Exams with Gradescope

  1. Exams will be emailed to you through a zip file download link.
  2. Upload exam zip file to Gradescope.
  3. If Gradescope cannot match a student’s name on an exam, this process must be completed manually.
  4. Grade submissions.
  5. Publish grades to initiate release of exams to students.

Minimum charge: $40 per job

  • Standard Paper Exams $0.20 per one-side page print
  • Document pick-up rate $40.00 per location
